John's Ratings Page
As in all of John's pages, to make it easier for people who are returning, I will add new bits at the top and date them too.

And at long last the final scores the world (well, probably about 6 of the world) has been waiting for.
But first a very brief reminder of my system of marking - I've seen 26 Dag and Red games this season and after each I've awarded marks from 0 to 10 for each player based on my thoughts on his performance that day. Completely subjective, therefore, but a bit of fun all the same. Clearly such a system has it is faults - for example a 3 minute appearance as a sub isn't going to get top marks and quietly efficient midfield displays don't always immediately catch the eye like a last ditch tackle or spectacular goal might. Only current players make the final table and those who I saw in less than 5 games don't feature (Lock, Hayzleden, Gallagher and Wignall).
And the winner is .Junior McDougald by a narrow margin
Top 10 (games played in brackets, average points per game after name)
1 McDougald (24) 7.33
2 Matthews (25) 7.28
3 Goodwin (16) 7.25
4 Broom (20) 7.2
5 Terry (24) 7.13
6 Cole (25) 7.12
7 Heffer (22) 7.05
8 Vickers (20) 6.95
9 Roberts (25) 6.92
10 Shipp (19) 6.84

Late March ratings:
1 (1) Goodwin
2 (7) Broom
3 (2) McDougald
4 (3) Matthews
5 (4) Cole
6 (6) Vickers
7 (9) Heffer
8 (5) Terry
9 (-) Roberts
10 (9) Janney
This after 23 matches seen. Notably Jason Broom makes a surge towards immortality through a series of excellent performances in the Spring. Not many matches to go now so it'll be close (if not exactly scientific). The above doesn't include the thriller against Morecambe or the debacle at Hayes, which could see a shuffling of the top 5.Lee Matthews will be the likely beneficiary by missing the Hayes game as the above ratings are based on averages throughout the season.

End of January 2001 Top 10
1 (2) Goodwin
2 (1) McDougald
3 (3) Matthews
4 (5) Cole
5 (6) Terry
6 (8) Vickers
7 (7) Broom
8 (4) Brennan
9 (-) Janney
10 (-) Heffer
Last month's positions in brackets as usual. Well, of course, this was the month of the Charlton games and the dismal Weymouth encounter. Superlative performances by most of those in the top 10 are reflected in this table -now after 19 games seen by yours truly.I gave several 10 out of 10's over the 2 Charlton games for the first time ever! Only loser this month (because those playing played so well) was Mark Brennan, still in the top 10 after his early season form, although Forbes and Broughton dropped out. It's close at the top. I'd say my winner at the end of the season will come from one of the top 4.
28th February 2001
By the end of December 2000 I'd seen 16 matches. Those in that month were: the 1-0 victory at Lincoln (doesn't that seem a long time ago, already?) the 3-2 win at Kingstonian and the disappointing 1-1 draw against Dover.
After these games the top 10 were:
1 (2) Mc Dougald
2 (-) Goodwin
3 (5) Matthews
4 (3) Brennan
5 (1) Cole
6 (8) Terry
7 (6) Broom
8 (4) Vickers
9 (9) Forbes
10 (7) Broughton
Most noteworthy was the entrance of Goodwin into the maelstrom -still only seen by me in 6 games up to that point. Junior still leading by example and the defence marshalled by Matthews looking awesome, especially at Lincoln. Brennan still up high despite not playing but now the exceptional cup performance will see him slowly slide down the rankings. Clearly I felt Mr Cole didn't have one of his best months in December -maybe a bout of flu? The Kidderminster Kid makes his final appearance in my tables, symbolically at 10.
21st February 2001
Saw 3 games in November the victory against Hayes 3-1, the draw vs. Chester 1-1 and the defeat at home to Southport 0-1. So after 13 matches the table read (with last month's positions in bracckets):
1 (1) Cole
2 (3) McDougald
3 (4) Brennan
4 (5) Vickers
5 (5) Matthews
6 (7) Broom
7 (2) Broughton
8 (9) Terry
9 (-) Forbes
10 (9) Roberts
Points of note: not a great set of performances in these matches and Brennan went up a place without even playing! Broughton's bubble had well and truly burst whilst Forbes entered the top 10 after a stirring display against Southport, his best of an interrupted campaign. 3 players had played in every game, Matthews, Jones and Janney so it is to Lee's credit that his consistent performances keep him high in the ratings.Important point : Goodwin still 'not eligible' as I'd only seen him in 4 games thus far. He was soon to make his presence felt!!
6th February 2001
This is how my voting system works:
I was always fascinated as a kid by the Sunday People's match day ratings...at least I think it was the People .It was under a streetlight, pre-dawn before I pushed it through the letterbox. It must have been about then I got my first anorak.... Last sason was fun deciding on a 1,2,3 for Steve's Man of the Season. This year, with the demise of any votes from the Cosmos for the aforementioned, I thought I'd do my own.
Marks are for performance per match and can be from 0 to 10.Nobody has score a sub 5, but several 10's were achieved in the Charlton matches.
To give you peeps an idea:
5 or less is a Bodley or Newell at Heytbridge last year
6 average/mix good things and not so good - Matt Jones is a regular
contributor on 6
7 a good game
8 better than good
9 outstanding - early Broughton
10 exceptional see above
Average everything at the end of each month and hey presto there's a table. OK it's not scientific, it's far from being objective and I can only award marks for the games I've seen.....but it's a bit of fun, eh?
The season so far next time..can you wait?
