GARRY HILL - Manager
Became the fifth manager in the Daggers history when he joined the Club during the 1999 close season. Gary had his first taste of football management with Sunday League side Priory Sports before having six, very successful, years with Heybridge Swifts. He took the Essex side from the foot of the Isthmian League division one to their best ever position in the Premier, the first round of the FA Cup and the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy. He left the Scraley Road side to take over the reigns at St Albans City towards the end of the 1997/8 season and took the Hertfordshire Club to the FA Trophy semi-final and the first round of the FA Cup. In his first season with the Daggers, Garry took the Club back into the Nationwide Conference by way of winning the Ryman League, he was also awarded the Ryman League manager of the year.
Steve's comments: A very good tactitian who studies the opposition and creates a gameplay to suit the situation. Last season he did tend to give substitutes a fair amount of time on the field but that doesn't seem to be the case this campaign
Tom's comments: Looks like a very good manager who could go far. Has done well with the experience that he has got.
TERRY HARRIS - Assistant Manager
Joined from St Albans City during the 1999 close season. Terry played for Sutton United, Dartford, Enfield and Chelmsford City and Dagenham for whom he scored at Wembley in the 1977 FA Trophy Final. He has also coached at Dartford and Enfield under former England Under 21 manager, Peter Taylor.
RICHARD HARPER - Physio
Joined the Club during the 1999 close season. Richard was previously physio at Leyton Orient, Heybridge Swifts and St Albans City.
TONY ROBERTS (Goalkeeper)
Born in Holyhead 1969, Tony joined the Club during the Close season having spent the previous six months coaching in the States. He began his career as a trainee at QPR and progressed through the ranks to full professional. During his time at Loftus Road he made two under-21 appearances for Wales, both in 1991 against England and Poland. Two years later he came on as a substitute for Neville Southall to gain his first full International cap against Eire, winning a second cap in 1997. After playing 122 League games in 11 years at QPR, he moved across London to the New Den where he spent a season playing for Millwall. At the start of the 1999/2000 season, he moved into the Semi-pro game and joined St Albans where he remained until March when he crossed the Atlantic.
Steve's comments: A reliable fairly non-descript type of goalkeeper who gets on with the job in hand.
Tom's comments: A good all round goalkeeper that doesn't show off in the big matches as much as the Mighty Goat-herd did.
LEE GOODWIN (Defender)
Joined the Daggers during the 1998 Close season from West Ham United where he served an apprenticeship. Made his league debut for Dagenham & Redbridge at home to Boreham Wood in August 98. A regular in the Championship winning side, Lee has now made over 50 appearances for the Daggers.
Steve's comments: Lee is good team player who works hard in the background, likes to get forward.
Tom's comments: Because of him playing at a higher level I still think he plays like it. He shows some intelligent touches and passes that can sometimes fool even our side.
ASHLEY VICKERS (Defender)
Signed from St Albans City just before the transfer deadline in March 2000. Commanding Central Defender who moved to the Saints from Peterborough United for a substantial four-figure fee during the 1998 close season. Born in Sheffield, he had spells with both Wednesday and United before moving to Worcester City, Eton Manor, Chelmsford City and Braintree Town. Ashley represented the Ryman League in the match against the FA X1 in December 1999.
Steve's comments: Has improved since his early matches for the club. Has settled well, I like to see him play as a full back on the left as opposed to the centre. This gives Jason a chance to push forward
Tom's comments: After having a couple of nightmare first games he is now looking better and more confident. An excellent player.
DOMINIC NAYLOR (Defender)
Dominic Naylor was initially signed on loan for two months from Stevenage Borough but signed permanently in December 1999. He was born in Watford in August 1970 and moved through the ranks at his local club. He moved to Halifax Town in 1990 making 6 appearances in the football League. After playing 51 games in two seasons with Barnet, he moved to Plymouth Argyle and played 85 games with them. In 1994/5 he moved to Gillingham then to Leyton Orient before joining Stevenage. In total, Dominic has made over 200 Football League appearances. He made his Daggers debut away to Basingstoke on Saturday 30th October. Dominic is currently on loan to Basingstoke Town.
Steve's comments: I haven't seen Dominic play this season but will be a good squad player when the suspensions/injuries kick in.
Tom's comments: Hasn't been a regular in the team this season but did well last season at left-back.
LEE MATTHEWS (Defender)
Lee joined the Daggers for a four-figure fee in January 1998 from near neighbours Purfleet and made his debut away to Carshalton Athletic. He is a former Southend United trainee who moved to Purfleet in July 1991 going on to make over 250 appearances for the Club. Lee has now made over 70 appearances for the Daggers.
Steve's comments: An outstanding hard tackling defender who has good vision and distribution, if he was injury free I feel sure he would have won the very popular MOTM for the last two seasons.
Tom's comments: Lee has got to be one of the most valuable players to the club. He can produce inch perfect tackles, and is the most consistent player in the squad. Hope he stays at the club for a long time.
TIM COLE (Defender)
Tim started with Walthamstow Pennant but had to wait until September 1995 for his debut due to an injury. Dagenham & Redbridge signed him in March 1997 from Leyton Pennant for a four-figure fee after being watched by many Football League scouts. Tim was named the Clubs player of the season in 1997/8 and 99/2000. He was selected to represent the Ryman League against the FA XI in December 1999 at Dulwich Hamlet FC. Tim has now made over 150 appearances for the Club.
Steve's comments: A great player to watch, he will have all you emotions exposed within a ten minute period. Has come into his own for set pieces.
Tom's comments: He makes up a quarter of what I believe is one of the best defences in the league. His powerful heading and tackling can only be matched by the great Glyn Creaser.
PAUL TERRY (Midfielder)
Paul was a product of the Clubs very successful reserve side. Brother of John, a member of the Chelsea first team squad, he made his Ryman League debut for Dagenham & Redbridge at Chesham United in October 1998 and has scored some important goals. Paul has now made over 50 appearances for the Club.
Steve's comments: Still can't get my head 'round Paul. He keeps himself to himself and you don't actually notice how much work and how much of a contribution he makes to a game. Paul is developing into a consistently performing midfielder.
Tom's comments: Has a good strong accurate shot and can dominate the midfield at times. Looks like a very promising young player.
MARK JANNEY (Midfielder)
Mark was released by Tottenham Hotspur in September 1997 and joined the Daggers. He made a great impression in the clubs reserves and made his full debut in a County Cup tie. Mark has now broken into the first team on a regular basis. Pulled a hamstring in the 0-0 draw with Gravesend & Northfleet and was then out for the rest of the season. Spent two months on loan at the start of last season to Braintree Town as he recovered from a hamstring injury.
Steve's comments: Mark is having a fine season but is not finding it as easy to run at full backs as he was last season. Keeps his work rate up and that's good enough for me.
Tom's comments: He has got to be up there with Lee Matthews as players that the club has got to hang onto. The way he runs at defences is a pleasure to watch. A great talent.
STEVE HEFFER (Midfielder)
Became Gary Hill's fourth signing, joining the club from Boreham Wood for £5000 during the summer of 1999. Steve's father, Paul, played for local Pro-club West Ham in the early seventies. Made his Daggers debut at Victoria Road against Carshalton Athletic in August 99 and scored his first goal a month later against Billericay Town. Steve has now played over 50 games for the Daggers.
Steve's comments: Another midfielder who shines consistently but does it unobtrusively. Work rate also very high.
Tom's comments: Works well in midfield but has also done well in defence in a few matches. Never seems to be match fit but always gets through.
MARK KEEN (Midfield)
Mark is a much travelled player whose last few clubs include Enfield, Braintree and Heybridge Swifts. Mark signed for the Daggers in January and made his debut as a second half substitute against Harrow Borough. Made a telling contribution towards the Ryman League Championship last season when he regularly came on as a substitute and turned games round.
Steve's comments: The perfect squad player, encourages all the other players and when he comes on as substitute he can turn the game with his great attitude
Tom's comments: "Super sub", as he is now well known. He can dominate anywhere on the pitch and can always score that important goal.
MATT JONES (Midfielder)
Tough tackling midfielder who followed his manager Garry Hill from Heybridge Swifts to St Albans towards the end of the 1997/98 season. Spent over four years at Heybridge having joined the Essex club from neighbouring Chelmsford City with whom he played for three seasons. A former England schoolboy international, he made a handful of league appearances for Southend United ten years ago. Matt joined the Daggers from the Saints in the 1999 close season and has now played nearly 50 games for the club.
Steve's comments: Matt get's a lot of stick for no real reason. Not the most elegant of players but has an Ok attitude, get's a bit pissed off by stupid comments from the crowd, but then so do I.
Tom's comments: An ever present in the team. Matt can create some great moves from the defence and produce some fine tackles, but is no-where near as consistent as he should be. Maybe he should be taken out for a couple of games and give Jason a chance there.
MARK BRENNAN (Midfield) - CLUB CAPTAIN
Mark Brennan has signed for the Daggers on a year's contract. Mark, who has recently returned from a spell in Australia, played for Ipswich where he played nearly 170 first team games before being sold to Middlesborough for £600.000. After two years with Boro he moved on to Manchester City for a fee of £500,000 before ending his Football League career with Oldham Athletic. In total Mark made more than 400 League & Cup appearances. He also represented England 6 times at Under-21 level.
Steve's comments: A good captain, leading by example. Great vision and understanding and always plays the bets ball for the situation. Can be a little late with his tackles!
Tom's comments: Is a big influence on the team. He is starting to get a late in tackles. I don't know if this is to do with age or just trying to be late.
STEVE FORBES (Midfield)
Steve joined the Daggers during the close season after impressing manager Garry Hill in pre-season friendlies. He began his career with Sittingbourne before being snapped up by Millwall for £45,000 in 1994. Three seasons later he moved to Colchester United where he made over 40 appearances and also spent a month on loan to Peterborough United. After leaving the U's in March 2000, he finished the season at Stevenage Borough.
Steve's comments: Had a good first game of the season.
Tom's comments: Did well towards the beginning of the season but an injury has kept him out since.
JASON BROOM (Midfielder)
Jason began his career with Eton Manor before joining the Club for a four-figure fee from Essex neighbours Billericay Town in 1991. He immediately featured in the Isthmian League Championship winning team that year and gained FA representative honours in 1993 and 1995. He was a member of the 1997 FA Umbro Trophy Final team. Jason's career has been dogged by injuries and missed a majority of the 1997/8 season following an operation on a recurring shoulder problem. Jason is in his testimonial season with the Club and broke Steve Conner's Club record appearances last season. Jason is the sole remaining player in the Dagenham & Redbridge side to have played for the Club in the Conference prior to their relegation in 1996.
Steve's comments: A firm favourite at the club, I personnaly don't like to see him play at left back but did well there last season. Prefer to see him in midfield where he runs at petrified full backs and isn't susceptible to the better quality payers that we have seen in this league.
Tom's comments: He has to be one of the best players we have had at the club. His attitude towards working hard and not giving up is a lesson to anyone. Hope he is an ever present and stays at the club for as long as possible.
PAUL COBB (Forward)
Paul has played for Leyton Orient, Enfield and had three spells with Purfleet. It was Purfleet from whom he joined the Daggers during the 1997 close season for a five-figure fee. He has finished the last three seasons as one of the top Isthmian league goalscorers. Represented the Isthmian League against the FAXI at Kingstonian in December 1997. Scored the first goal in the Essex Senior Cup triumph over Purfleet and finished the last three seasons as the Clubs top League goalscorer. Paul averages a goal every other game for the Daggers having scored over 60 goals in 120 appearances. Scored his first hat-trick last season against Harrow Borough.
Steve's comments: Paul has been a good player for this club and will be a fine player to have in our squad, has looked a bit out of his depth at times but I'm sure he will show a bit of his magic and do well.
Tom's comments: Has always been one of my favourite players since his arrival in 1997 . Has scored some magical goals and hope he can get back into the team and back at his best.
JUNIOR McDOUGALD (Forward)
Signed for the Club during the 1999 close season from Leyton Orient. Made his league debut for Dagenham & Redbridge away at Harrow Borough on the opening day of the season. Junior has also played for Chesterfield, Millwall, Rotherham, Brighton and in France for Toulon in 1996/7 where he scored one goal against Lille in the French first division. Junior scored the Clubs third goal at Hampton & Richmond Borough in April which confirmed them as Ryman League Champions.
Steve's comments: Junior was undoubtably the fastest player in the Isthmian but has now reached his level and is therefore not as effective. Is working well with Drewe and will finish the season with much credibility.
Tom's comments: Since he first came to the club his control has become a lot better and so has his level of skill. With cup runs coming up I hope that opposition managers don't see him an snatch him away from us. It just wouldn't be fair.
ROB HAWORTH (Forward)
Rob Haworth, signed during the close season from St Albans City. A 6 foot 3 inch centre forward, Rob spent four seasons at Clarence Park after also playing for Fulham, Millwall, Kettering Town and Aylesbury United. Rob made an immediate impact for his new Club scoring in his first game, a friendly against Leyton Orient on July 20th. Rob has joined Sutton United on a month's loan.
Steve's comments:Haven't seen him play enough to form an opinion.
Tom's comments: Have only seen him play twice, and both of them were in friendlies.
DANNY SHIPP (Forward)
Danny joined the Club from Northern Irish League side Coleraine. He started his career at West Ham United and spent two periods on loan at the Daggers before being transferred to Ireland in a £150,000 deal in 1996. Within two minutes of his first appearance scored a 30-yard stunner at Peterborough United in the FA Cup. Danny has now scored 50 goals for the club including three hat tricks. Danny averages a goal every other game for the Daggers having scored over 70 goals in 130 appearances.
Steve's comments: Not played to many games this season yet, I feel he will do better than Cobby, the main reason for this is his strength.
Tom's comments: He has been injured but I sure he will do just as well as Cobby, dad.
DREWE BROUGHTON (Forward)
Born Hitchin in October 1978. Joined the Daggers on a two month loan in September and scored twice on his debut in the Daggers 6-1 victory over Hednesford Town. Drewe began his career at Norwich City and is currently with Peterborough United whom he joined for £100,000. Towards the end of last season he spent a two-month period on loan to Nuneaton Borough where he scored 2 goals in 11 appearances. During his career he has also played for Brentford and Wigan.
Steve's comments: Strong, fast, competitive and free scoring. He is a quality player that could probably play at a hight level, let's hope he signs for the Daggers so that we can call him ours.
Tom's comments: Looks like a top quality player that shouldn't be playing at this level. You can see that he comes from a superior league to this one just with his first touch.
